As we approach our 40th anniversary in 2027, we are excited to share that the Roth Foundation has been growing a lot, in terms of both our programs and our board. We thought it might be interesting for you to “meet” the board members who make it all happen. So, welcome to the second edition of our Board Member Spotlight series!
It was devotion to an old boss who was very much in the Lois Roth mold that drew me to the Foundation. When she asked me to do it, I couldn’t say no. And every year since 2013 that I have worked with LRF has drawn me closer to its people and programs. Now I can’t see myself ever leaving.
Human connections are more important than ever in this day and age. The arts and humanities help us make those; the social sciences help us learn about them. LRF supports people acting and studying in both these areas.
In my work with the Foundation, I take the lead on the Awards for Excellence in Cultural Diplomacy. These awards honor Lois Roth’s legacy by recognizing cultural diplomats (Americans and locally-employed staff overseas) who have a) demonstrated superior creativity, knowledge, and performance in achieving lasting results, and b) made important contributions through mentoring and advancing the profession. These awards contribute to the three R’s that cultural diplomacy fosters so well: Reciprocity, Relationship-Building, and the Relentless Search for Common Ground.
The most pressing issue I see is the need for us to expand our work in fostering international dialogue. At the moment, too many people are turning inward, whether out of fear or anger. We need to help each other reaffirm our faith in mutual understanding and respect through face-to-face dialogue and engagement. This is what our programs do, but we can do more.
At the Lois Roth Foundation, we are few but mighty, with only a handful of people doing everything it takes to run the Foundation. We are a fun and energetic group! We welcome volunteers to help with our programs and are especially in need of a board member with expertise in fundraising. Why not consider joining us?
